The Ontario Land Tribunal has declared that a 2020 bylaw aimed at regulating short-term rentals (STRs) in Oro-Medonte Township was “bad planning” and would not effectively address the issue. The bylaw, which defined short-term rentals as those renting out for 28 days, would inadvertently make benign family cottage rentals illegal and introduce unintended consequences. The tribunal’s decision suggests that an outright ban on STRs may have unintended consequences and advocates for a licensing regime instead. Oro-Medonte Township is now encouraged to seek a more reasonable solution to the STR problem in collaboration with the community.
